Pecan production in Travis County

Pecan season was in full swing in October. At the Berdoll Pecan Orchard, they are hard at work bringing in this year's harvest.

At the nearby nursery, they grow pecan trees for their orchards and for others to buy. Here, the staff at Berdoll Pecan Orchard does extensive work and research to decide what works best in the local climate. After researching, seeds can be tailored to grow perfect trees.

Workers plant these seeds at the orchards. When it is time, a device is used to shake the pecans off the trees onto the ground. Another machine, pulled by a tractor, then comes by and sweeps these pecans away from the trees to the middle of the roads which have built between the rows of trees. Another tractor-pulled machine picks up the pecans and bags them.

When the pecans are brought back to a central location, workers hand pick debris from the bags and then the pecans are dried. After the drying process is finished, they are loaded onto a conveyor belt that sends the pecans through the final cleaning and shelling stages. Mr. Berdoll determines the quality of the pecans by hand himself.

The pecans are finally bagged and sold to the Berdoll Pecan Store on Highway 71, right past Austin Bergstrom Airport .
